The Ninth Annual Malibu Invitational kicked off with a bang at Duke’s restaurant in Malibu CA, where legends, masters and pros all came out to support young Lyon Herron and his ongoing battle with Gardner Syndrome.

The event was started nine years ago to raise money for Lyon to pay for his non-FDA approved cancer treatment – a quite unprecedented event, supported by nearly every company in the industry; no event exists where competing brands come together like this.

Thanks to everyone involved, this year’s Invitational raised over $30,000 for Lyon and $10,000 for THERAsurf (Therapy, Healing, Equality, Respect and Advocacy), whose goal is to provide children with special needs the opportunity to benefit from the ocean’s positive energy and healing power by getting them safely into the water and up on the waves.

Top pros, legends and volunteers took to the water with the children for a 40 minute expression session each day to catch some perfect right-handers at iconic First Point Malibu. Tears of joy streamed down the faces of all who watched as the volunteers flawlessly rode their delighted charges to the sand.

Minutes after THERAsurf ended, the pros hit the water with 3 to 4 foot glassy conditions. Top pros in attendance included Kalani Robb, Tim Curran, Nathaniel Curran, Dean Morrison, Danny Fuller, Evan Geiselman, Luke Davis , Dylan Goodale, Nick Rozsa, Andrew Jacobson and Reef Mcintosh. Even Taylor Knox made the long drive up (although he didn't surf) to support what the Malibu Invitational is all about: giving back to those in need.

One of the highlights of the event was the legends’ division, with the likes of Allen Sarlo, Ricky Schaffer, Strider Wasilewski, Evan Caples, Donny Wilson, Solo Scott, Raphael Lunetta and a bevy of ex-pros who have graced the lineup for the past 40-plus years.

The pros flocked to the shoreline to watch these diehard locals battle it out for bragging rights and a beautiful handmade trophy by Charles "Chucky" Decoup. Paddle battles and smack talking are always an entertaining part of the legends’ division, but at the end of the day everyone came together to raise awareness and support for Lyon Herron and THERAsurf.

Eventual legends winner Donald Day had his car stolen from the PCH during his second round heat on Saturday evening, leaving him with no clothes and a wife and kids stranded on the side of the road.

Sunday was a different story. The thieves were apprehended in Alhambra, Donald’s car was returned, and he posted 8-point rides all day. After hoisting the trophy over his head during the awards ceremony, his face still dripping with champagne, the 43-year old physics teacher simply said, “be kind to each other.” - Pascal Stansfield.
